A Picture of Calvary

All of our dramas come in a REPRODUCIBLE Director’s Notebook. The Notebook contains five sections: Script, Music (when applicable), Director’s Helps (organizational tools to keep your practices running smoothly, Costumes and Scenery (ideas for costuming and scenery as well as the set design), Resources (how to obtain items need for your production at a reasonable price). Also included are advertising poster, newspaper and radio ads, bulletin cover, even a thank you letter for your cast! All is for one low price which is affordable for any size church.

We invite you to step back in time with us, back over 2,000 years to the foot of an old rugged cross. As you do, you will meet people, not the characters of some fictional story, but real people who were a part of that scene so long ago. Some were believers; some were not. Some sought His death; others mourned it. But each had a unique response to that Roman cross and the One hanging there; the One on the center of three crosses. The One over Whose head the inscription was posted, “This is Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”

So begins “A Picture of Calvary,” a program focusing on the response to Christ of 15 Bible characters. Full of Scripture, the powerful message of this play will challenge each one in your audience to think about their own response to Christ.

Cast of Characters

This list is flexible-You may choose to use any combination or all of the characters. Each character portrays a specific response to Christ.

(up to 8 females, up to 9 males, depending on who plays the Narrator and child)

Pontius Pilate - Ignored Him (As seen through the eyes of Pilate’s wife)

Caiaphas - Rejected Him

Mary Magdalene - Received Him

Nicodemus - Ashamed of Him

Peter - Doubted Him

Mother and Child - Trusted Him

Mary of Bethany - Worshipped Him

John the Disciple - Adored Him

Mary, the mother of Christ - Loved Him

Paul - Persecuted Him

Lydia - Served Him

Centurion - Acknowledged Him

This program may be performed with or without the following six songs. The Director’s Notebook contains the sheet music (vocal and piano accompaniment). An orchestrated accompaniment is available on CD.
